Things to Do in Madison

  • Tour the majestic Wisconsin State Capitol Building. The capitol is an architectural masterpiece and a hub for many Madison activities. Modeled after the nation's capitol, this spectacular building is a must-see for any visitor.
  • Explore the Dane County Farmer's Market. One of the largest and finest farmers markets in the United States takes place Saturday mornings on the Capitol Square from the last Saturday in April through the first Saturday in November.
  • Bike, run or walk the Lake Monona Path. Follow a scenic path along the lake and if you're very ambitious, complete the 12 mile loop.
  • Marvel at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. Opened almost 60 years after Frank Lloyd Wright first proposed his designs for this lakeside civic center, Monona Terrace may well be considered Wright's final masterpiece.
  • Many adventures await you on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus. One of the most beautiful and top-ranked campuses in the country, University of Wisconsin–Madison, offers a rich variety of places to explore. Must-sees on campus include: the Elvehjem Museum of Art, the Geology Museum, the Memorial Union, Allen Centennial Gardens, a stroll along Lakeshore Path, Bascom Hill, and of course Babcock Hall for ice cream.
  • Shop State Street. At the heart of downtown, State Street offers an intriguing blend of character, culture and carisma. This colorful street is home to almost 200 shops as well as dozens of coffeehouses and restaurants.
  • Treat yourself to Concerts on the Square. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra performs free outdoor concerts on the Capitol Square on Wednesday nights during the summer.
  • Madison's downtown "Museum Mile" features the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, the Wisconsin State Historical Museum, the Madison Art Center and the Madison Children's Museum.
  • Olbrich Botanical Gardens offers a feast for your eyes. Enjoy the 14 acres of outdoor specialty gardens, a botanical center and the spectacular Bolz Conservatory, a sunny, 50 foot high, glass pyramid that houses a tropical paradise.
  • Bring the kids (or feel like a kid again) to the Henry Vilas Zoo. You'll be delighted with the wide variety of wild animals, birds, reptiles and fish. One of the nation's few free zoos, Henry Vilas Zoo is open year-round.
